Hood scoop

So I'm starting the body work on my 1970 2000.
Does anybody cut out the hood scoop for better air flow into the engine compartment ?
I'm thinking maybe four 3/4 inch drilled holes may work as well.
Not looking to do a full restoration, just cleaning it up to look nice.
Thoughts ????

The hood scoop already is functional, as the plate has a small gap to allow air to pass. If your cooling system is operating correctly there is no need for additional cooling for the stock engines. My car was my daily driver for over 10 years and I never had any cooling issues. Typical summer days in Oklahoma are in the mid 90’s with some 100’s. If you are doing an engine swap then additional cooling may be required.

When I bought my car the hood scoop was sealed, perhaps by one of the 3 previous owners. I’ve thought about opening it up but I haven’t had any overheating problems as it is.

I do have a 3 row radiator and the lower scoop is in place.

Bikermike brings up a good point about the lower scoop. I wonder how many with overheating problems are missing that lower scoop? I had always thought that the PO had bent back the little shield on my hood scoop until I saw pictures of other hoods and realized it was factory.

Both the hood scoop and lower scoop were intended to direct air into the rad. Opening up the hood scoop defeats this purpose and does nothing for the engine!

One easy way to increase flow through the radiator is to block off the hole on the drivers side next to the radiator.

Thanks.....upon closer inspection, I see what you're talking about. On either side of the plate are small gaps. I guess that's good enough.

If you look closer, it should be open at the bottom directing air down to the radiator.

One additional item that makes a huge difference for cooling is the fan shroud. Without it, the air is not forced to flow through the radiator. So, if cooling is a concern, make sure that you have one.

Not to mention a shroud reduces the potential for collateral damage to anything that might get close to the fan while it is in motion.
