Carb Rebuild?

Post by jbarnish »

Hello,

Mechanic telling me i may need a rebuild kit as one of the carbs is flooding with gas. Do i need a minor or major kit, also how do i know exactly what carbs i have? Its a 1970 1600.

Thanks,

Jeff

Is the mechanic knowledgeable about Datsun Roadster? If not you will likely have to teach him about vendors, carb kits etc. Meaning you have to learn. So while the List can answer some questions, it would be useful to check the vendor sites, also Ebay for carb kits by Keyster, floats, fuel valves etc.
You might just need to to clean the float valve in the carb bowl lid, or replace, and maybe the float is a sinker...needs replacing.
You can do this yourself, unless you prefer to pay someone else to do it. But it is not complicated to learn.
Good luck

Thanks Linda!

No, he's just a local mechanic that i trust. i'm handy, just never worked on cars before. where do i get the resources to 'learn' about them? meaning, how do figure out how to clean the float valve in the carb bowl lid?

I'm no SU expert, but flooding sounds like a sunk float, a common problem.

Well the archives on this site are a little clunky to use. You may need to input several different search terms to get the info you need. Here is a start: Go to “Quick Links“ then “Search”. Now type in “carb rebuild kit”. You can even type in the “Author” box the name of anyone you think knows or has done the same job, so using my name, here are results :
search.php?st=0&sk=t&sd=d&sr=posts&keyw ... thor=Linda
As you can see, searching pulls the term you used but also other info can be in the thread, so you have to sift or refine your search.
If you don’t want to think at all, or search, or ask and wait for an answer, you can go direct to vendors for OEM and aftermarket parts. A no brainer, right? But if you want to learn or do, this site is a great resource.
Use other terms or other names to get additional results.
This puts you in the ballpark to help your mechanic. Maybe print out any info possibly useful for mechanic. You are the gofer..
