Looking for a trunk lock for my 66 project. The one I have is trashed. Key not important as I can get that taken care of. Thanks.

I'm in the same bucket. Has anyone figured out an alternate (Aftermarket / Nissan) lock mechanism that may work?

Trunk lock differences early vs late???

I was looking for a trunk lock for my 66 project. I reached out to several people and came up empty. I was told the early trunk locks were different from the later trunk locks. It was never made real clear what the difference was and whether a later trunk lock can be used on and early car. If I had a late one I would compare the two or even try installing a later one to see if it works or not. I did score a trunk lock with keys from a very generous member here and I truly appreciate that. So, my dilemma has been resolved.

So if any one has a later trunk lock and an early car-maybe they could try this to see if a late will or will not work on an early car. Thanks.

The early are chrome body with the core removable fairly easily. The late are zinc plated pot metal with a stainless cap that prevents the core removal easily. They are interchangeable, but look different. A door lock can be used as well iirc. You just change the arm on the back and add a return spring.

So, just to clear this up. Sid was correct. I actually have the original early lock and a later lock. The difference is the chrome body, the clip that holds the arm on and the ability to easily remove the lock cylinder of the early trunk lock. The later one has a different clip holding the arm on and does not appear to come apart easily. I tried as I thought I could re-key with removing the tumblers from one to the other. A few pictures for those of us whom like visual aids.

Lock covers used to be available to locksmiths, but I have not been able to locate any. The stainless cap can be pried off and then the core removed for recoring. My efforts at removing the cap without damage have been fruitless.

Just a small update on using a later trunk lock. I could not get the new lock to line up correctly. The small notch to the right of the trunk hole needs to be on left to make it work. I took a small file and carefully put a small notch opposite of the right side in the left. Trunk lock fit like a champ and works perfectly. It might have just been me but that was my experience. New trunk lock is installed and works great. Still going to have the back up wire just in case the keys end up in the trunk someday. :D

Oh, c'mon. What are the odds of that happening?

You know it will eventually happen. When you least expect it.
