Puller for steering wheel hub

Post by Linda »

What kind of puller can be used to get this piece off? In the past it came off pretty easily but this time is stuck. It has a plastic backing so the jaw puller seems like it could not be used....

There is a tool called a steering wheel puller. It is a flat bar with through holes plus a center post. Maybe advance or someone would lend it?

Also a harmonic balancer puller will do it as well, also available on loan typically. Harbour Freight has this for $16.00 just don't use it to hold your car up.

Autozone loaner tools has this:

Seems the same.
The bolts don't put too much stress on the plastic?

The idea is to put even pressure across the piece - normally a steering wheel, but this piece should pop free before breaking. You don't want to screw into the plastic, just the aluminum piece there.

Even though I have a Snap-On puller set I have whipped up pullers a few times out of scrap lying around just to save the time of hunting one up and going to town to get it. This one would take a piece of plate around 1/4 thick with four holes drilled. Three to accommodate the three bolts that thread into the three threaded holes, and a larger one in the center for the push bolt which is of course bigger. A nut is threaded onto the push bolt to take the place of threads in the plate center hole. I usually put a smaller nut and a drop of oil between the push bolt and the shaft for protection.

The Autozone puller didn’t work as all the screws were too big for the hub. I managed to get it off anyway. Thx for info.
