68 2000 Fuel Line Question
Hi All,
I'm putting a new stock fuel pump in my 68 2000. My question what is the proper way to run the lines in from the filter and out to the carb. I've attached two photos showing it being run two different ways?
Thanks
Henry

Re: 68 2000 Fuel Line Question
I've never seen one routed like the first picture, the second photo has the top cropped to much to verify.

The first picture shows the top/higher fitting going to the carbs. The second shows the bottom/lower fitting going to the carbs.

Re: 68 2000 Fuel Line Question
I think you are asking which is the inlet and which is the outlet of the fuel pump. If that’s correct then I’m sure you will get an answer soon. I don’t recall, but if no answer by morning I’ll go out to the shop and let the car down and look. Regardless, running the fuel line over the top of the cam cover is incorrect as it will absorb too much heat. There should be a clamp that attaches to the front of the cam inspection cover that you route the fuel line through.

Re: 68 2000 Fuel Line Question
Yes I'm trying to check which is the correct inlet from the filter/gas tank and what is the correct outlet to the carbs. The two picture show it being run both ways?

The pumps are marked with arrows to show fuel flow in and out

Re: 68 2000 Fuel Line Question
My 70 has that pump, the the rear pick up from the filter then back to the tank
the front goes to the carbs it ran up very near the fan blades in a clip off the themostat housing , instead of over the valve cover. , but yours might be safer
Note my line. Pump to carbs is / seems as tough as a hydro hose , its not a 5 cord fuel line , seems OME

Re: 68 2000 Fuel Line Question
There are different versions of the fuel pump. I have observed them in hand.

Re: 68 2000 Fuel Line Question
Top picture, but instead of routing the fuel line over the hot valve cover route it in front of it. There is a special dual clamp (for fuel line and emissions hose) that is supposed to be attached to the timing chain inspection plate.

This is possibly correct. Hopefully yours will look this good when finished.

Re: 68 2000 Fuel Line Question
Glad I found this. For some reason, my fuel lines are reversed. Or, to better state, the fuel line and the vent line are reversed. I just bought this project car and the fuel pump does pump fuel from the vent line. The fuel line on the passengers side is cut and has a screw in it. The fuel actually comes from the top tank vent line on the drivers side, passes the carbs, goes around the front of the engine to the fuel pump, then back around the front of the engine to the carbs. Very stupid, but there must be a reason. Possibly the fuel line is clogged and they decided to use the vent line from the tank.
I can fix it all, but I had a question. Where does the vent line connect? I see it comes out by the carbs and heads down toward the carb on your foto.

Re: 68 2000 Fuel Line Question
Its not stupid, its a step up from the earlier design
Its a return line. After the carbs ...not a vent
You got it wrong

Re: 68 2000 Fuel Line Question
Ok, fine, I'm stupid, but not any more thanks to your knowledge. So maybe someone has a picture of how it connects up there at the carbs? (Actually, the stupid part was the upper "return" line was being used as the main feeder and the bottom line was plugged. They had two fuel lines running around the front of the valve cover rather then just one.)

Re: 68 2000 Fuel Line Question
The older system had a 1.5 tp 4 psi f pump it pumped to the carbs and the needle and seats stopped flow , which can cause a vapor lock in the line only has to produce slightly more than the pump.
The return system uses a 4 to 7psi pump but is able to reurn to excess to the tank , which heats the fuel too every time it cycles , plus take vapor lock much less likely , also if you have 4 psi gas line and in a crash that breaks the line sprays gas
I can remember people installing a 4to 7 psi pump on the earlier system and it. Flooding the carbs. ( many other manus not datsun )
