Nice job Rob. The pothole and speed bump situation in Edmonton must have improved greatly since I was last there šŸ˜‰

I may bring it up a bit, still test fitting, however It is actually higher than the fibreglass front lip I have on my 300ZX convertible in that shot...

If you haven't shipped my order yet, can you add a set of sway bar bushings if you have them please?

Cheers,
Rob

If the broken frame mount was the torque reaction bar, this was a common problem... mine is completely missing and has been for the 37 years I've owned it. I have one cut from another frame but have never had it welded in... I'm just nice to her and avoid burnouts etc. It was recommended that an additional plate be welded in to strengthen it, so you may want to consider that since you have access and means.

Suspension Time!

Had a mechanic friend over to do a quick inspection before I send it in for safety and he pointed out a few things to replace...

Centre rear brake line by the diff was cracked and nasty... replaced

Rear shocks (actually, all shocks) were not looking so good, had a set of Gas-A-Justs on the parts shelf

20230723_120909.jpg
Front lower ball joints had play and boots were disintegrated, recommended replacement.

Rest of the ball joints were OK but all the boots had disintegrated.... lots of cleaning and boots replaced

Brake Time!!

I have several 300ZX cars and a garage full of parts... found a full set of 30mm Aluminum calipers that will eventually be fitted to red bumper roadster:
20230503_180113.jpg
Popped out the pistons for cleanup and to powdercoat the calipers
20230503_180042.jpg
Nissan seal replacement kits
20230519_214952.jpg
back from the powdercoaters and pistons reinstalled
20230522_165309.jpg
Used a fine dremel abrasive wheel to clean the insides of the pistons

Full set, reassembled and ready for install

Well folks, 5 years after I bought red bumper 67.5 1600 home from auction and after much repair, it went in for road inspection today and

SHE'S LEGAL!
inspection.jpg
Not without drama, however... it knew it was going in for inspection and of course, stuff started up...

Horn just quit last night. Ran a jumper to the horn, fine. Metered the relay, voltage where it should be. Pulled apart the horn button on the wheel, all good.

So, pulled the combination switch bullet connectors apart and cleaned and re-connected... BEEP there it is! Whew!

And now all the lights quit: Headlights, markers, taillights, brake lights, dash lights and even the damn map light! Car starts and runs fine. The signals and 4-way hazards work just fine thank you. Grounds seem fine. Getting late, inspection tomorrow... will come back in the morning and have another look.

And sure enough, found it: Fuses looked fine on top, metered continuity with the multimeter ON THE TOP, but underneath where they were clipped in into the fusebox clips they were all nasty and corroded:
fuses.jpg
Pulled them out, got new ones. Before installation, I sprayed down the clips with De-Oxit spray and scrubbed with a ScotchBrite pad. Installed new fuses and:
lights.jpg
All with a half hour to go for inspection time. Drove it over to the Nissan dealer down the street, booked it with a senior tech who I've known for years, old 510 racer guy. As I'm bringing it into the shop, horn cuts out again. Tech isn't worried... 'I'll check it out, gotta be something simple'

All the 20somethings at the service desk are 'Woah, what's THAT?' as the red roadster drives into the shop. Hilarious :D

3 hours later, tech calls: 'Come and get it... she passed and is ready for registration'

What about the horn? I ask... He cut and replaced a bullet connector on a wire from the combo switch that had oxidized inside the wire insulation, explains my intermittent horn.

So now it's to the state i wanted, road legal in pretty much stock form. Have plans and parts for upgrades, but will hold off the rest of this year and shake it down in it's current shape... I predict many small fixits will be cropping up.

New plate tomorrow!

Great job Rob. Another Red datsun roadster on the road in north central alberta. Canā€™t wait till it becomes ā€œthe project carā€ and is fully completed ! Thatā€™s 4 running roadsters in our car club now.

Went for the first long drive today...

Always fun in a new (old) car you're not totally familiar with. Every little noise has you going 'wait... what was that sound?'

Heard a small metallic tinkling noise while putting around and after cocking my head and trying to locate it, I saw the keys hanging from the ignition were making a tiny wind chime.

Have a tapping, brake dust shield kind of noise on left hand turns, will get it up in the air and see if something is rubbing with the wheels turned.

The big news is that the temp and fuel gauge are working! Did the solid-state voltage regulator mod from the tech wiki, pulled in a separate switched 12V as the one in the dash harness wasn't sending 12V and wired it up. Both temp and fuel gauge started working!
20230902_115431.jpg
20230902_115428.jpg
On the way back home from my buddy's garage, the temp started climbing up to 3/4 on the gauge (215-220) and would drop back when I was idling at a stoplight. It never went higher than that and it was a warm but windy day. So when I got home I checked the sender location with my IR temp gun and it was 220 right at the sender next to the exhaust manifold. Anywhere else (radiator hoses, cooling 'tower', rad) was quite a bit cooler, 180-190 or so. I suspect the heat from the exhaust manifold is affecting it, will fab up a little heat shield for the sender and see if this helps.

Gas gauge is reading 3/4 but dropped to 1/2 on the drive back. I filled it up before the day's drive so it should be full. Will pull the sender tomorrow and check the reading while moving it through it's range.

Here it is filling up for the day's excursion:

Weekend roadster work day with Steve...

Tweaked his new clutch master/ss line/slave install for pedal height and slave engagement adjust and some leak fixing and general fluid bleeding.

On Red 67.5, fabbed and installed a small heat shield between the exhaust manifold and the temp sender connector. Also installed a new bullet connector on the sender as the old one was pretty tired. Temp reading seems fairly steady now:
heat shield.jpg
Had Steve take the 67.5 out for a short drive, he was grinning... it sounds awesome with burble on the overrun.

Visor install!

Thanks to Ross @ Sports Imports for the new visors and forum member tjp for the mounting hardware set.

Had to open up the sealed ends of the new visors to install the rods into the internal metal sleeves:

20231012_202320.jpg
Bolt the assembly up to the windshield frame... had the original screws left in there from the previous owner... thanks!

Wiggle the visors to the center, flip up and done:
