Horns
What should the actual horns look like, mine have layers of paint on them and wouldn't work in the car. I have pulled them off and hooked them directly to 12v and they do work. I figure they are just caked with paint, I have most of it off now but wondering how I should finish them off. Also, the wire from the loom to the horns are crunched, so will most likely need to be replaced. All my searches lead to "Horn Buttons".
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

Re: Horns
Mine were the old fashioned "swirl" type horn.
They were finished with semi gloss black originally.

Re: Horns
Thanks guys, black paint it will be. Has anyone taken one apart, I'm wondering if I should go inside and clean up the contacts. But don't know what's inside.

Re: Horns
They are very simple inside, an electromagnet only. One of mine didn't work so I took it apart. I expected the inside to be dirty and what not as the outside looked bad, but the inside was spotless. Turns out it just needed the tuning screw (or whatever it is called) adjusted. 6 screws and you're in.

Re: Horns
I think the horns came in various finishes, probably changed throughout the years. Don't take my word for it though. I am no expert, I just like to talk alot
It looks to me like they came silver.

and a half year part number...26310-14600. The part number did change and maybe that's when they went black

Re: Horns
Personally I run these. The look alike the real thing just a different color and louder. They have a good sound and will get you more respect when you press your horn.

Re: Horns
Bossbob,
I have restored mine, here is a pic inside. There is a rebuild kit on Ebay for the horns, gaskets and new screws. Mine were originally black.

Re: Horns
Greg, I was intending to try to reinforce that the horns came from the factory plated in an effort to prevent them from being painted black, LOL.Solex68 wrote: Sat Mar 07, 2020 11:07 pm Whoops...I didn't even see your post. Read right past it. SorryGood answer BTW.

Re: Horns
Thanks for this thread and the pictures. My problem was due to corrosion of the rivet which holds the power terminal. I disassembled the horn and drilled out the old rivet from the inside. Then I filed the spade terminal including the rivet hole. Then reattached using a new steel rivet (1/8" diameter x 1/4" grip). Reassembled using liquid gasket.

Re: Horns
I highly recommend that you add a secondary backup ahooga horn for emergencies, parades, and general fun on a daily basis.

Re: Horns
Hehehehehe! I have one of those I bought years ago. Never fitted it, perhaps I should for, you know, "emergencies"
