Is this a new problem, or has the car run this way for a while? Have any other things been added or changed before this started?
If you remove the coil wire from the dist cap and put it 1/2 inch from ground (DON'T hold it) and crank the engine over you should have a fat blue spark. If it's yellow or no sparkit suggests weak ignition components. If it looks good, move on to plug gap, mixture or stuck chokes. Reach under carb and make sure the nozzle is all the way upwith the choke off, and check to see if the carb piston is moving freely. With the oil cap/plunger on the carburetor removed, the piston should drop with a nice thunk if you lift it up all the way and drop it. Should do the same with the plunger in, just slower but smoothly all the way down. If it hangs up, pull out the choke and see if it falls the rest of the way, if it does, needle may be bent or not centered in the jet. A stuck float can do it too, fuel dumps into the engine.
