Hood scoop trim mounting

Any ideas or experience with protecting the hood when mounting the hood scoop trim piece?
I was thinking of thin rubber strip, 3M clear door ding protectant film etc.
The trim has the usual clips which can rust so I will need to use a protectant or rust converter on them. I cleaned them up first with Evapo- Rust.
I know about taping the area around the ends to avoid scratches.
thx

I put down 3 layers of 2" wide blue masking tape (the nice thick stuff).
I hand start the trim with hand pressure, then hold the bottom of a 2 x 4 against the trim and tap the opposite end of the 2 x 4 with a mallet. A little at a time, checking and asjusting if needed has gotten me there several times without added decorative scratches.

What I want to do is protect the hood directly under the trim. The clips start to dig in, scratch off the paint and then rust could start. So in addition to protecting what you can see, I want to protect underneath the trim too... Does that make sense?
Thinking the 3M stuff I used under the rear hoop to protect paint might work.

Ah, I see.
Those clips are sharp and grip pretty hard.
I don't know what you might use that would still grip.
Maybe cut them out and mount with trim tape.

I was concered with hood rust due to the clipss. Before installation, with clips in the steel trim piece, I added some clear RTV sealant to each clip. Then mounted the trim. I dont know how well it worked because I havent had the trim off, nor do I plan to take it off unless some condition forces me.
