what cam setup?

Post by Import_sounds-of-mid-GA »

Im not plannin on doin this soon b/c of a prelude im buying, but is the solex cam the most practical "hot" cam for the street? I want more than the SU cam, but i havent felt a solex cam yet.... is the solex just right for street?

Thanks!!

Depends on what you call right.

It will have a rough idle, and not come alive till 3K if you use the solex carbs with it.

But after you get into the power band, you will forget what those other carbs are called. I would recommend a 3:90 diff instead of the 3:70 for better use of the power band. The ignition and air filter assembly will need upgrade as well.

I'm sure you will get allot of other replies, but the day to day street engine, SU's are the top choice, if you spend most of the time below 3500 revs and stop and go traffic.

The B cam works ok with SUs, but likes Mikunis. It is not the hottest cam however. I've got a 284 intake 294 exhaust at .48 lift in right now and it pulls hard to 7000+ rpm. Its made my Schnieder cams, however I don't know if its :1 rocker ratio rather than the U20 1.4. Mine might have been ground to the correct ratio, but I don't know. If it wasn't it has less than .48 lift. The B cam is a good cam as Bob Sharp was pulling 180+ hp out of it back in the 60s.

I dug up an old "B" cam. It has a bit of surface rust. Can a machine shop bring it back to life?

Shifty,

American Cam Grinding could bring it back to life. That is all they do is cams. Joe Bray the owner is the man when it comes to stroker cams. I am sure they could handle a U20 cam. They are reasonably priced as well.

I had Iskyderian regrind 2 cams to the specs of the datsun z-196 profile. It has 306 deg duration and .530 valve lift. I used L series keepers with taller lash pads. It has a reasonable idle and enough bottom end for comfortable daily driving. I would think a solex cam would work fine on a stock car.
