4 barrel conversion?

Post by Import_sounds-of-mid-GA »

Has anybody heard of a 4 barrel carb conversion for the U20? Kinda interested in seeing one. My dad said "back in the day" the guy he bought his SRL from had a few he raced and said one had the 4 barrel..... seems like if a set of solexs makes a difference and nice 4 barrel would too!

I have seen one. It was a manifold that bolted to the SU manifold. It gave a plenum which split to the front and rear with the 4bbl bolted to it. It was in a pile of parts and the SUs were on the car. Sort of speaks to the value of it in my mind. For the fuel to flow in that setup, it would have to go down, make a 90degree turn front or rear, make a 90degree turn towards the engine, about a 15 degree turn up and then back to level before it entered the SU manifold and then dealt with the bend going into the cylinder. That is a lot of twisting and turning to ask of a fuel mixture in my opinion. Solex carbs are not that tough to come by. I just sold a set...

Well, would a pair of progressive Weber 2 barrels count? http://www.311s.org/phpBB2/album_pic.php?pic_id=128

Let me know, they are for sale :D

alternate carb installation

Post by FergO2k »

At Les's turfside show 4-5 years ago, there was a fellow with an orange 'work in progress', who had made his own intake manifold to graft a single Rochester (??) carb from a V6 mustang onto his R16. He was a vintage bike guy with the "anything can be made to fit anything" approach. HJe just wanted to get it running while he did other drivability/reliability work. (not a bad approach)
Not necessarily the ideal option, but he got in on the road!

I got my first roadster, a '70 1600 when I was a junior in high school. (That was a while ago - I went to my 20-year reunion this year!)

I got my first just after High School. The car was only 15 years old then. After a few hours crawling around under the car and bending over the hood, I wish I was 15 not 41. It's a terriblre thing when you finish fixing it, you can barley bend enough to get in and out of it to go for a ride.
