The Formula Roadster will rise again.

Post by Btbarratt »

I've brought home the former Team Formula Roadster. It was wrecked in a race at Spokane wa in July 2012 and had set torn down till now.
I'll be rebuilding "Bob" to E-mod solo autocross rules, and hope to do some hillclimb. And track days too. Chassis will be rec and round tube, likely a 4-linked rear. Power to be determined, but looking for 300-350rwhp.

Previous owner is setting me up with a set of Japco fiberglass fenders, I'm wondering can anyone tell me the overall tire coverage (width) of a roadster with Japco glass installed?

Im looking at front suspension donors and don't have a solid idea of how wide will be too wide.

Former JapCo and ProdBodies glass molds now live with Mike Anderson, the owner of the Rock Vest and Dave McDowell 2L race roadsters. You don't have to worry about front clearance with the JapCo fenders; they were made generous to clear Goodyear 9" wide cantilevered slicks on 7" rims. You'll have plenty of room under there. Congratulations on the car and may the restoration go well for you!

The Vest car in front uses stock lower arms, and spindles. It runs a 1 inch spacer per side, and 15x7 zero offset wheels. 23x9x15 Goodyear Sports Car Special tires mounted and inflated measure 11 inches. In the rear, you set the width using the metal wheel well tub, then adjust the fenders while mounting to achieve the desired fit.

Awesome pick up, by the way. Huge project, but a really cool car!

Thanks Mike, I've spent a fair amount of time drooling over your race Datsuns. If this one turns out a quarter as cool, I'll be very happy.

Picked up one big piece of the puzzle today. A full set of Japco fiberglass.

And I've got an arrangement for a rolling tub parts car this coming spring, so it'll have a stock(ish) frame under it. Also have a line on a lightweight quick change rear axle.
I may have to ballast up to race weight for Solo xp.

Well, a little progress. Stripped it down to bones.
Never lined up a chassis, so im building my own. The existing roll cage will be added to, to make it a space-frame type chassis.
Front-end will be miata lower arms and spindles, narrowed 1in per side, pinto rack, custom upper arms.
Rear end is a speedway quick-change, with a satchell link arrangement.
Power will be turbo buick 3800 v6 controlled by fueltech and a t-5 trans.
