Hardtop gaskets.

Post by Aevigan »

Hello forum! I have tried searching but can’t find any good leads to follow. Does any one have a source for hard top gaskets? I messaged datsunparts.com and they didn’t have any thing for sale or a source to point me in the right direction.

I bought a snug top hardtop with broken bolts/damaged mounts and cracked seals. Decided to rip it apart and restore it. I remade all the mounting tabs internally and am about to start the refinishing process tomorrow . Decided to skin the roof with carbon fiber cloth and resin. Once all that is done I will need all the seals. Any one know where I can get replacement locking window seals and edge gaskets?

Restoration Specialties and Supply, Inc. Windmer PA. They have a lot of weather strip material. while they will list nothing for your specific need, you should be able to find something from the catalog pictures and diagrams.

Also McMaster-Carr has some assorted profile gaskets that may work for you.

Another source for a wide variety of rubber parts is Steele Rubber Products.

Would be good to add your location to avatar or signature.
I went to local (SoCal) hot rod swap meet and got edge trim for inner/outer skin seam, and also larger “P” seal for h/top to back deck edge, all for dollar a foot. The edge seal had an integral metallic stiffener, so once tapped on, it stayed put with no adhesive.
Just out of curiosity, weigh the top before/after you re-skin it. Good luck, please post pics.

Updated my location, never noticed I could do that lol. Can’t weigh the roof before because I’m already into the project. But I can definitely weigh it after.

cut open the top part of the roof. As you can tell I was super precise 😂

ripped out these wooden mounting plate things that are stripped out and some had broken bolts.

I created a metal square then drilled three holes that matched the original wood bracket. I then added three steel threaded inserts to the metal piece and it fit back into the existing three holes relatively easy. Glued em in But they were a tight fit that required a love tap to instal.

used some expanding foam to fill the void then I placed the original pieces I cut ontop of that foam.

removed the body line going back , don’t want that lump in my carbon. Also body worked those pieces a little.

little primer to see how it’ll look. Gotta paint it black then I wanna prep the inside and start there.

inside of the roofs weave is a red/black weave. I wanted the roof to pop so it makes you look up at the masterpiece lol.

outside is a black honey comb pattern. Wanted it more mild on the outside because eventually I want the car a grey/silver paint color.

It’s gonna be hard to accomplish but I don’t quit. 🤷‍♂️

Cool! Great look. That red/black is carbon/Kevlar hybrid weave, so now you have special super-powers when sporting the hardtop as well!
Great pics, keep em coming. (I am right down the road in Los Alamitos, and have access to the Composite/Fiberglass dept at Cerritos College -half way between - so let me know if you need any supplies when you get to "glassing")

decided to take this and make it into something else to practice laying carbon fiber. Honestly my first try here and not sure what I’m doing. Also since I installed Bluetooth and a system and want the shaved look that’s all gotta go..

few epoxy layers later.

little dry fit before some sanding. I like it overall, going to do that glovebox to get one more practice run , and I think it’ll tie everything together, then back to the roof.

Did you get your gaskets yet? I am using 1"x 5/8 foam for around the rear. I haven't received it yet. I hope its thick enough but it's the thickest I could find. found this on Steel Rubber Products

I don't have rubber for the porthole windows. They did not have any when I removed them. I feel like I should put some rubber on both sides before I rivet them together.

Couple of options / techniques.
This one would have flange glued to porthole frame, and bulb compressed when acrylic was riveted:
https://www.mcmaster.com/rubber/rubber- ... unt-seals/

this one would shove on to edge of window, the have flange riveted onto top. Just over time the rubber will dry out and harden, and be prone to ripping right at the rivet hole. (especially with our smoggy air in SoCal)
