Identify this transmission please
Hello, I received this transmission with the car I bought. The owner said it was a 5 speed he was going to install into the 1966 roadster I purchased.
Is this a 5 speed that will fit in my car? Is it from a diesel truck? I plan on selling it and will list it in the classifieds. Value? How do I tell if it is good? Shifter moves smooth.
Thanks
Kent

I'm no expert by any means, but I think that is the elusive diesel truck 5 speed.

If there are 5 gears then its a 71B from behind the sd22 diesel. To fit into your roadster you will need to either modify the x-frame for the rear mount like I did or go up and over the frame . When I fit my diesel 71b to a 1/2 year 1600 I had to grind one of the bellhousing webs or it would have rubbed on the body where the tunnel starts.

Re: Identify this transmission please
Not sure if they are cast Iron, more like cast aluminum. The roadster friendly SD22 version of the 71b that I have I did pull from a $400 running but rusty early 80's 720 and mine isn't cast iron. About price, your location or willing to ship it will determine what you may receive for it. I went the cheaper route to acquire mine, I sold the engine and scrapped the body to recoup a good share of the initial cost. When I rebuilt mine I replaced the input shaft and front counter gear from a different 71b, it was to get over the issue of a low first, it changed all the gear ratios in it into ratios that are very close to a roadster 4 speed. Then fifth gear overdrive gears were changed with ones from the car version of the transmission and I end up with a very tall 5th. Plus there are different 5 gear hubs, it depends on the year of the 71b, from the parts I used I had a choice so I installed the ones that used a brass syncro instead of the steel servo 5th setup. Others on here have also did or had this conversion done to their cars so they may have helpful info on their installation to help if you decide to install it.

Re: Identify this transmission please
It does look like the diesel trans.
I have done the diesel front half swap with 240sx (71C) guts/backhalf. Also know of 2 other transmissions here in BC, all three are aluminum.
As was stated earlier it has some heavy webbing on the outside which one web will need to be 'trimmed' a fair amount to clear the body on the drivers side.
If you can get hold of the 280Z 5 spd (1980?), you could just swap the bellhousing/bearing end onto it and have 1st to 4th almost the same as the roadster 5 spd, with a taller 5th (.773), which might be a good combination for a little better highway driving with a 4.11 or so rear gear...
Diesel ratios are 3.592, 2.057, 1.361, 1.00, .813
Cheers,
