oil filter replacement

I like the old style cartridge oil filter that was used up to 66, even though it is a little messy. I am wondering if people bother pre-filling the cartridge with oil and how you do it. Maybe pour oil down the tube? The instructions in the service manual are confusing because of the poor English. What do you recommend?
