Hi,

Installing new weatherstrip kit from Dean for 1966 roadster with the front quarter windows which pivot. Can’t seem to find any rubber which seats the small glass pice inside the metal pivot? Does anyone know how to seat the window in the pivot so it doesn’t move around?

At the very bottom of the wing window glass there should be small strips of pliable material that hold the glass in the bottom piece with the pivot pin. You should be able to get some material at a good glass shop. I heard it comes in two thicknesses. I believe what was on there is pretty thin. That is what holds the bottom glass in place. I took your picture and put a black line where the rubber goes. Hope you get the idea.

IIRC it’s called oil tape. After cutting to size, spraying it with WD40 (I think) makes it swell up and hold the glass in. I have also used a windshield urethane and that works also, just need to let it cure before handling.

Thanks. I had no idea what it was called just that it was needed to hold the glass in place.

Did some more research and it looks like the stuff is called window weld ribbon seal.3M makes some. It looks like this might work.

That product is for setting windshields, won’t easily work for setting in channel as it very stiff. After looking, what I was told years back by a glass shop was “oil tape” seems to be called glass setting tape and is available in different thicknesses. The urethane I have also used comes in a tube for a caulking gun. Pretty sure it was a 3M product.

Was wondering about thickness. I saw the urethane in a tube while I was looking. I could find nothing on "oil tape". I will ne doing this sooner than later and will find the correct stuff and post it in the wiki. Thanks.

I haven't tried it but I have some butyl seam sealer that I got for the various seams that needed resealing. I bet that it would work well for your application. automotive glass shops use it.

Okay, it is actually called glass setting tape. It comes in various thicknesses 1/32's, 3/32's, 3/64's and more. Kind of expensive if you buy a whole roll which you will never use. You should be able to go to a glass shop to buy a few feet. I found 20 feet of 1/32's on FleaBay for $27.50 free shipping. Since you have the glass and the frame you can measure so we know exactly what we need.

1) Measure the thickness of the glass

(2) Measure the gap width of the channel the glass fits into

(3) Subtract the thickness of the glass from the width of the channel then divide that figure by 2

This listing is for one 20 foot roll of 1/32" thickness

Here's a low tech and inexpensive solution which I used on mine:

After looking at what Nissan used, I just used a bicycle inner tube - worked perfectly, since the material allows for some compression. The fit was nice and tight and I used a razor blade to trim around the bottom frame. I was very happy with the way it turned out.

Ok, using the bike inner tube and just trimming. Bigger problem is how to actually replace the glass and the remembering which way the pivot sits. Really frustrating how such a simple looking task can be. With the new window rubbers in place, trying to fit the glass is almost impossible. Any advice on how to refit the windows?
