Nothing in The Datsun Roadster Book.

From the TechWiki: Differential flange bolt - 8-9kg/m (57.8-65.1ft/lb.) Pat Mahoney's handy dandy Torque Values card similar.

Can anyone confirm these values? These are 5/16-24, mostly dry with a little gasket sealer on the treads.

Already seems pretty tight @ 40ft/lbs. Going to leave it there until I hear from the brain trust.

Seems way to high for a 3/8.
Grade 5 max is 30 dry.
Grade 8 max is 45 dry.

No, the ten nuts that hold the differential in the housing.

Pete, did you measure twice? 3/8" sounds a bit to big.

The original description says bolt. I would think the flange at the end of the pinion for the 4 nuts/bolts that hold the driveshaft to the pinion flange would be around that torque value. The nuts that hold the 3rd member to the axle housing are more likely in the 20ftlb range if I were to speculate.

I interpreted Differential flange in the TechWiki to mean the flange on the differential that goes over the studs on the housing.

65ftlb seems excessive for those. Have you checked a fsm?

The 311 and 411 manuals (which are pretty skimpy) just mention tightening the nuts in an alternating pattern. No torque values listed.

The 620 Resource site shows the Differential Attaching Nuts torque as 12-18 ft/lbs. A 620 pickup uses an H190 like the roadster; just different spline counts on the axles.

If 12-18 is correct, do I (should I) back off the nuts, then retorque, or.......????

Replace studs and nuts. Gasket might be compromised as well.

It's possible if you leave it as is it would be fine, but, I totally understand not being comfortable with that. What pebbles said would be your best insurance (unfortunately).

510 wagons also use the H190 live axle, and 510 guys confirm 12-18 ft/lbs.

After further consultation with Gordon & DEF, decided to back off 5 of the nuts, then retorque to 20 ft/lbs, then repeat with the other 5 nuts.

That's a good idea. If no leaks then I think there is no harm no foul.

I suspect the 65ftlb torque value is for the driveshaft bolts.

65lbs would have twisted those puppies right off!
