When I rebuilt my engine, including a new rope seal, it was really really stiff turning it over by hand.
I would suggest getting a new battery or something. Mine still started fine and now that it's broken in it turns over fine by hand. I have the DatsunParts gear reduction starter.

Holden, Was it a noticeable improvement over the original starter? Torque.

I'm not so sure about the torque. The old one worked until it didn't. I put in the new starter and finally rebuilt the engine 5-6 years later. How long until you get your ride back together?

Installed a gear redux starter from Amazon, and although it does not have any branding on it the thing really spins the new engine now. $48 and change for it and who knows how long it may last but does the job. Hopefully some fine tuning and car will be back on the road. Thanks to all for your inputs. Boy how worn my starter was.

Good job, Tom. Engine running well now? I'd stick with the bigger sellers if possible but the shorter size makes it easier to change. Be sure to add the ground strap.
