They used to sell an add-on whitewall, went between the tire and rim when mounting, and then a bit of cement to the sidewall. I saw a few years ago, didn't look bad. Modern tires with the whitewall look.

I think they were called gangster whites. I'll check with some of my secret pimpmobile parts suppliers.

Sid...I think I could write a thesis on White Walls!!!

There is a company/item called 'porta-walls'. They are widely available and pretty inexpensive.

You can purchase them at Lucas Antique Tires:

http://www.lucasclassictires.com/

They have the best prices around...about $45 for a set of 4.

Now, there have been quite a few folks(on the volkswagon boards) which have complained about using the porta-walls, Some have had a hard time having them mount properly. Others had issue with them 'flopping' around at highways speeds. Yet others have complained that if you ever even slightly scrap a curb, the porta-walls tear. Lucas tire recommends using tubes if you run porta-walls with radial tires.

But on the positive side...you can't beat the price. You can by a set of 155/80/r13 tires at your local tire shop for $100, then add the porta walls and have a grand total (including mount/balance) for about $200.

I highly recommend speaking with Lucas Tire...They are good folks and were very willing to discuss & answer questions.

Dave...

Now you do know that I own a Schwinn Sting-ray scrambler, with the original banana seat and a 4 ft high sissy bar....

Dan,

Sweet! I will check it out!! I have some new radials, so the lee press on whitewalls may be fun.

On that bike, are you going to chop it and do the whole lowrider thing to it?

You can't chop up the nice bikes, just the boring ones. And this from Sid, the preserver of originality!

I've been meaning to stop by this local clothing store and talk them out of the Schwinn in the front window display.

Sorry to dig up an old thread. I have WWW radials that I purchased from Coker on my '48 Dodge. Portawalls can be used on bias ply, but shouldn't be used on radials because of the flex. Although I know some people still use them with the radials. Also, another source for WWW radials is Diamond Back Classics. http://www.widewhitewalltires.com/
