Header Removal?

Post by mantolik »

I am sure this has been discussed, but has anyone tried to remove the header without pulling the engine up? With the starter, carbs and manifold removed, would dropping the oil pan give enough clearance?

The header elbow will not fit in between the oil pan lip and chase (frame) I had this problem when I installing the motor R16.
I had to loosen up the engine mount bolt and shift the engine over to the passenger side just enough clearance for the header elbow to fit through.
This is my first experience installing this motor perhaps someone can give you a better idea on how to remove your header out.

I think it depends on the header. I bought a header from Mike Young, removed the carbs, exhaust manifold, and starter, and was able to easily install/remove the header.

U20 header from Dean went in without any dramatics, intake and carbs off, but the starter was in place. I have the short H20 forklift starter, might make a difference.

Loosen the LH motor mount and push/pry/pull the engine over whilst lifting the header. Seems to me I've both removed and install headers on both SP and SR in this fashion

Thanks all.....I will save it for another day and let you know how it comes out. The header is old (72?) and it is a SRL (sorry, forgot to mention that).
Seems to hit the oil pan no matter how I try, so the engine mount would seem to be the best try. Again, many thanks!
