Back when the chains had a master link, some of the old school guys would pull the cam cover, pop the upper chain link, link the new chain to the old one and keep it tight. Next, the other guy would roll the car in 4th gear until it pulled the new chain all the way through. They’d separate the master links and link up the new chain to its other end.
