1600 and transmission

Post by dynaguy »

While at the Palouse Days Car Show, a guy came up to Shawn offering a 1600 engine and 5spd. tranny for sale. I was in the area yesterday to look it over. Complete engine with extra set of carbs with intake. Transmission appears to be a 4spd. Am I correct on that?? I'm aware that this is not a hugely desirable set-up, but might be able to pick it up cheap. Opinions on value appreciated.

Yup, it's a 4 speed.
I don't see smog fittings (or holes) so would guess '67 or older. I'd bet the tranny has servo syncros.
As always, condition is key so, I'd pull the fill plug and see if there's oil in the tranny. Pull the spark plugs and see what the look like.
Check the engine oil.
With the plugs out, see if you can turn the engine over.
What is the seller saying about the engine/trans, why where they pulled.
If anything negative, either in the story or in your inspection, I'd pay no more than $100 (because you have to assume it's mostly scrap).
If you're confident the engine combo is in good shape and will run well, I'd go to $250
I paid $400 for a pull out '70 engine and trans that was known good (and has been for two years). Since you can't be absolutely certain all works unless you see and drive it in a running car, there's still substantial risk, thus the lowish pricing.
IMHO, even if it's nfg, there are parts, (especially if the head is uncut) that are useable in both the engine and trans so better to have it than scrap it.

The guy bought it to put in a Morris Minor, decided to rebuild the original engine. He had planned on rebuilding the 1600, thought he had a 5spd tranny, so in other words, not a lot of positive info. I was able to turn the engine over with a crescent wrench. He wants $200, but I think $100 will buy the lot.

If a stroker is in mind....a 5 main crank is necessary....correct?

Can the engine # help to determine 3 or 5 main?

Thanks for any enlightenment

If youre thinking of a 2 liter stroker using a U20 or H20 crank, yes must be 5 main.
I think theres a 3 main.combo that gets to around 1800 cc but dont remember what parts are needed.
I think its worth the $100

Dont know if the engine number is reliable enough to count on.

Engine number is absolutely reliable to count on. Over 40000 and it is a 5 main. The 1800 stroker for the 3 main uses 1500 crank and rods.
