Cooling system pressure?

Does any happen to know the max pressure I can apply to my cooling system to check for heater core leaks etc...and not damage anything?

I would not exceed 15lbs, but that is me. Keep in mind that there were at least 3 different ratings for the pressure cap. The 1500s got a rating of 3-5lbs iirc. The 1600s (pre smog) got a rating of 7-8lbs. The late cars got a rating of abotu 12lbs.

I may have the ratings off as that is from memory, not any written notes.

Looks like a new heater core may be on the to-do list for the weekend.
At least that is my initial guess as I havent had the cowling off to see if the windshield misting is from a leaking hose running down to the bottom of the core cap.

Glad to help! Your local radiator shop should be able to make the heater core right. New ones can be had as well. Best of luck!

This was discussed earlier this year on the mailing list. A good leak test is to plug one end, then use a bicycle pump to pressurize the heater core whilst it's covered in water.

I acquired a few test tube stoppers and I'll give it a try this weekend.
Taking out the core is not one of my favorite jobs, so first I might spray a bit of leak tek or soapy water to do a quick pressure check.
If it pooched , then I will have to sort thru the parts pile to locate my spare core and test it also.
