5th gear welding

Does anyone here know the correct way to weld a 5th gear? Does it need to be heated before welding? Are there any other issues other than making sure there is clearance for the welds that I should consider?

Call Mark Degroff machining in LA - Number is 818-701-5274 - He's done lots, including mine.

Definatly call someone with experience, heat is what you want to avoid.

So what's the procedure, I'm guessingassemble in the normal manner and tack weld the nut to prevent loosening?

Well, we went with a silicon brazing. Very low temp, plus the gear hadn't broken. Everything was clearanced, everything turns super smooth by hand in all gears. Cant wait to get it in. Its got 3 new synros, all new bearings, detent springs and balls, centering springs, shift forks, and gaskets. Should be pretty sweet. Hopefully it wont come undone like the it did before.

That makes sense, it's not a structural weld, just VERY solid Locktite.
As far as all the new shifter stuff, that should be really nice/

The theory behind the 5th gear seperation, was that there wasn't enough clearance between the locknuts and 5th so when it heats up through general use, it starts to bind and eventuially it lets go. Mine is clearanced enough that it shouldn't touch when it heats up, and shouldn't let go for any other reason.

Can't wait to get it in, running around at 5k rpm is getting really old, that and 3rd is becoming more of a pain to shift into. It doesn't grind, it seems to just lock out. It sometimes takes 3 or more tries to get it to slip into gear.

Uh no, you won't. I have the tranny, but it still needs to go in. Besides I have to work. I just took 5 days off for Dan Philbin's wedding, and now have a boat load of stuff to take care of. There is no way in heck I will be able to get off early enough to go race.
