Of course it's at the very last step of the differential rebuild when vice let's go and the carrier case hits the ground sending the pinion through the ring gear...

Last step in the procedure is to apply a little load and check the backlash markings with paint.

I suppose it's a matter of physics. When a 30-ish pound pumpkin lands on the pinion the ring gear teeth simply snap.

Crap.

Key learnings:
1. Check Vice tension frequently.
2. Complete rotation of ring gear before checking pattern.
3. Do not attempt to evaluate pattern while spinning the ring gear.

Well, with all the rain we've had, the lake level is above the launch ramp at hobie cove. Maybe I'll take the hobie cat out tomorrow.

Ouch, hope it's just a 3:70 or 3:90 and not something special!
