Racing Seat Suggestions?

Hey Guys -

I am reassembling my 68 Race car and trying to find a couple of options for a mid range (in size and price) seat for the car. I prefer something that will carry a bit of a vintage vibe, but also that will be acceptable to SVRA or most vintage governing bodies... all pictures and suggestions appreciated.

Figuring on fitting size 34-36 waist, and probably 5'8 +...

Also wondering about the limitations for running sliders vs hard mounting? Will most vintage race organizations permit sliders?

I have muddled through some of the SVRA guidelines, but prefer some real world feedback.

Thanks guys,

dw

I have seen a couple cars lately with the Kirkey seats. They look good, the Aluminum looks vaguely vintage.

Better idea...

Anybody have pics of race seats installed in SVRA or similar eligibility cars? (Info on what the seats are would be great too...)

Would consider buying used too...

Thanks guys!

"Figuring on fitting size 34-36 waist, and probably 5'8 +..."

Do you intend to get taller before you start racing?? - lol

I am confident that I am still growing Peter! Ha.

Actually, I am trying to be realistic - I am building the car as much to save it as to race it.

I am hoping to get a chance to drive it a bit, but there is no road course here in Calgary, and the closest is at least a 3 hr drive away, so I want to make sure if I buy stuff for the car, that it will fit the next guy as well. To be honest, I'd be happy to legitimately crack 5' 8"...

Cobra classic seats look pretty nice affordable too! I personally don't have any pics But I remember andyroo talked about putting them in.
I'd also take a look at http://www.classiccarseats.com/ they lists all the dimensions and have a few styles that look nice but pricier. I'm personally thinking about getting the lemans style down the line.

Here's the post from andyroo on the cobra seats:

Remember that most vintage organizations will want either and FIA certified seat, or you will have to brace it in place to their satisfaction.

Thanks Alex - those are some sharp looking options.
Hey Mike - Do you know what the certification period is for the FIA seats?

Every club has different dates/standards on allowing FIA seats that don't require back bracing, be sure to check the club's rules you hope to race with (I'm not familiar with SVRA's current rules on seats). To get around that problem, a good fabricator can add a crossbar to your roll hoop that allows an adjustable back brace, as well as a place to mount your shoulder harnesses. Most cool looking vintage seats are not FIA certified, so going the back brace route allows you a much larger selection of seats to choose from. I've always run aluminum seats with a black cloth cover for a good vintage look. My preference is UltraShield. This is a good option that allows custom sizing.

Great info Troy! Thanks a lot.

My car already has a brace that was previously used to secure the old fibreglass seat that was in the car when I got it - so I am guessing it should be adequate. From most of the roadsters I have seen, my cage, by most standards, is probably overbuilt...

I will agree with Troy I run a UltraShield seat in my 67.5 Roadster and have been very happy with it.

Thanks Guys!

I ended up ordering a Sparco Sprint V. Lots of decent feedback online , and not outrageously expensive. I will post pics when it arrives this week...
