Seatbelts

Post by 68DSU »

My car is getting closer to road worthy status so I started looking at my parts box(s) and pulled out the stock seatbelts. :Tosser:
Can anyone suggest a resource of replacements? The ones I have are the ones you let your enemies use.

I know if I was really interested in safety, I would be driving a bright orange Hummer but since I have a roadster instead, I have to be careful where I can. My seatbelts are the originals. They have been weathered, and survived a couple of crashes. They should have been replaced decades ago and I consider them an essential and a place to not go cheap.
After researching, I decided on Ssnake-Oyl. Their name kept coming up. I will report back my experience here for the group.
They get a few complaints but I had to dismiss them in my mind. One complained that his over the phone quote was too low and his written quote was higher. I'm not sure where his complaint is. And, they absolutely would not do an over the phone estimate.
The procedure is a little odd but I understand it. You ship your belts to them and they examine them and send you a quote. You are somewhat committed at that point.
First step was to ship two lap belt sets, two shoulder harnesses, and two luggage straps. I got a phone call after a bit to say they arrived and to say they did not have the narrow material for the straps (not a big problem as thy aren't really a safety thing and they are in decent shape). They didn't want to rechrome the metal bits because they could not replace them if something went bad. I guess that is erring on the side of caution. They confirmed what I wanted done, confirmed the make, year, model, and build date of the car. Ours are simple with no retractors or moving parts.
I'll write more when the letter arrives.

I have new fresh Datsun seat belt hardware but you'll need to have them re-webbed. $150 a seat, which includes a shoulder strap.
They have never been installed and only show minor tarnish where they bolt to the floor. You'll need to re-web then as the lengths are not correct for a roadster, they were made for another Datsun in the 67-69 range. The same hardware used on roadster belts. Only the lengths differ.

The letter from Ssnake-oyl arrived awhile ago, I've been too lazy to post.
Two pages. First page is about how to pay, shipping and billing dates, and warranty info. All pretty standard stuff. They will charge your card about ten days prior to shipping back. I like the idea of not having that money out there waiting for a long time.
Second page is the quote. Attached is a sample of the fabric and the details of what they will be doing. two each of seat belt assembly, shoulder harness, and repaint the buckle cover. 17 metal pieces are cleaned. I have to look at 17, I think there should be an even number.
Total with shipping and insurance is $717.00 Pricey but again, this isn't an area to go low bid. It only has to save you one time to be worth ten times that amount. They gave an anticipated shipping date of 9/23, I asked them to delay to the first week of October because of a trip and they agreed.
We will see what happens next.

The "new" seatbelts arrived and have been reinstalled. Here are my thoughts about dealing with Ssnake-oyl Products.
On the negative:
It is expensive.
They weren't able to touch the luggage straps or rechrome the seatbelt parts.
It is expensive.
On the positive.
I feel I have the best seatbelts I can find.
They kept in touch every step of the way.
They had a reason for not rechroming that erred in my favor.
They delayed shipping until I returned from a trip without any hesitation.

They only have to work once to be worth it and seatbelts are not a place to go low bid so overall I am happy.
Bottom line is that they were responsive, kept me in the loop as far as their progress, and delivered a quality product on time. Can't ask for much more from any company.

I have used their products on many builds. Very pleased. Not original to Datsun but not 700 bucks either.
