How many electrical connectors are there, 2, 3,4,6 pin?

Post by Linda »

Here's a question for the experts, is there a list of how many connectors of each type along with whether it is 2.8mm, 4mm, or 6.3? Vintage Connections has various sizes but I don't know how many I need. I want to slowly replace the plastic connectors when I have time. I know it is a pain to remove the terminals and that it is good to have spares to replace broken ones. I have done a couple previously but more need to be done.
Thx for help.

It sounds like you are asking about the single wire bullet connectors Datsun used a lot in the 60s to early 70s right?
that low temp solder is a good fix for a weak connection
Original multiplug conn. In new condition very rare ,Id bet and brittle if 50 plus salvage yard finds is my choice if I need a m plug

Uh, lots?
You might be able to figure it out from the wiring diagrams ot perhaps from the excellent ones Curtis has on the kendo site but Ive not seen a connector list. Probably differs from year to year.
Sorry, not much help.

Thanks guys. I know where to get some, eBay and Vintage Connections, I just don't know how many I should order of each type. Guess I will just wing it by estimating what I will need.
I lost my tail lights when I had a cracked connector behind the radio. I thought I would be smart and glue it, but oops, no continuity now  So a 6 pin connector is first on the list .....

Linda, I can't help you with how many to order, but I agree that it is a good idea to be proactive about replacing them. When I removed the harnesses from my '67, I found that one connection in the eight pin that connects the the engine compartment harness and the under hood harness was pretty well melted away, and would soon have been a problem.

Yes what got me started was having a loose starter harness, even though I cleaned it not too long ago and also a alt plug that would get loose too. Poor running condition then a complete power failure made me replace the starter harness and redo the alt connections. So much better now .So time to start taking a closer look at wiring and not waiting for burned connections, crumbling cracked connectors, etc. Plus it looks better.

My counts from Curtis diagrams (http://www.kendo-usa.org/datsun/):
Tail 2x3pin (Dash harness connects)
Engine 2x3pin (lights), 2x6pin (dash harness connects), 2x4pin (dash harness, alternator), 1x6 long/wide (voltage reg)
Dash 3x3pin (2 tail Harness, 1 starter), 5x6pin (2 engine harness connects, 1 light switch, 2 console harness), 3x4pin (engine harness, turn switch, heater motor), 1x2pin (?), 3x6pin long/wide (ignition, wiper switch, wiper motor)

Sum
1x2pin
3x3pin
4x4pin
5x6pin
4x6pin long/wide

Good luck,

I've ordered some connectors, terminals and the ratcheting crimping tool from Vintage Connections. Very nice stuff. The crimping tool is awesome and makes beautiful crimps. I used to solder the connectors until I got it. If you don't have one I suggest getting the crimper when you buy the connectors and terminals.

VC also sells a little tool for reaching into a connector to release the terminal (ETL1 or ETL2), which is pretty handy.
the 2 pin is HP2N
the 3 pin is NP3N (guess)
the 4 pin is HP4N
the 6 pin is HP6N
the 6 pin long/wide is either the MP6N or MP6L (check first)
Good luck,

I have to agree with rustbucket on the beauty of that crimping tool, it’s amazing.

I have used a pin tool they sold a few years ago that was round with different sized pins for releasing terminals. I found a tiny jeweler's screw driver worked better for me. Getting the little terminal tab flat without destroying the çonnector took some practice.
The crimper has gotten a lot of positive reviews though.

Replaced this bad connector with a nylon latching type. Ouch.

What? You forgot about me? I'm crushed. Well, maybe not. But I did return from Japan a bit worse for wear on Sunday. That humidity over there just does me in. Bronchitis and sinuses now. Plus the stupid jet lag.
