Can anyone post a picture of an early Solex air cleaner with a comparison picture of the later model?
Unless it is an obvious differance visually please explain the differances between the two as well.
Also, For 1967.5 SRLs is the air breather a clear indicator that the car is a factory original Solex car ?
And would that mean that a car with the later version is most likely a Dealer or Owner installed Solex upgraded car?
Thanks, Rick

It's very obvious. The early ones have an opening all the way around but apparently people were complying that the induction noise was too loud (?) so they closed it down with just a few holes to make it quieter. I think Brian was panning to do a dyno test with early vs late vs open trumpets.

I don't think I've every seen one without a breather. The solex filter still has a spot for one like the SUs
Oil a little low? Time to get a longer dipstick:)

Like Aidan mentioned, early versus late is very obvious! Early is open (no sides to assembly; you can see the filter element), late is closed off with a series of holes in the sides to allow air flow.

There’s really no way to differentiate a US American export solex car from one that was su equipped from the factory... Might take some detective work... though, if you have an early, open air cleaner, solex pan and early type 2’s, odds are it probably came that way

In Alvin's pictures
The last picture is a late closed air cleaner that has extra holes drilled.
The picture above it is the correct late closed air cleaner.

Incorrect.
That is a 1968.5-specific air cleaner with "extra holes" drilled from the factory. It was placed on the rear parcel shelf along with the cowl grille prior to painting.

Thanks for the explanation.
Please see the picture of my 1967.5 SRL breather.
It looks like the 1st & 2nd pictures shown of the Factory and the Add on have a stainless band with holes drilled around the air filter. THe holes shown in my car's air cleaner are in the filter itself. An I missing a piece on mine?

Looks like a correct early air cleaner. Breather hose goes on the middle of the base plate... the assembly itself is only two pieces. If no one else does, I’ll send pics that show the breather fitting

You can see the fitting for the hose on the pictures I put in the gallery of the NOS late filter
