bearings 101

A recent FB post prompts this...
What I know of bearings is what any race engine builder should know. And what I know is from my building 3 main R16s, not the later 5 main R16 or U20.
The 3 main R16 is a unique beast (engine number > 40,000), but from Col Joe and myself, it's the one to run, it just spins faster than the 5 main! Three main bearings however, in contrast to the 5 mains, are harder to source. So here are the part numbers to search for.
Federal Mogul 6703M
Clevite MS1002GO
Daido M205K
Repco 3M2752
Anything that crosses to the Nissan number 12207-12200 STD
12209-12201 0.010 under (0.25mm)
12210-12201 0.020 under (0.50mm)
12211-12201 0.030 under (0.75mm)
12212-73600 0.040 under (1.0mm)
There is no new bearings available for the 3 main, only old stock, to my knowledge.
On rod bearings the situation is much easier, as bearings are plentiful, like the 5 main bearings, because of the H20 forklift, which is still in use to this day.
Clevite CB981P
Sealed Power 4-67015CP
NDC CB1002GP
And anything that crosses to 12111-12210 STD
My friend in roadsters Tim Putland just came across multiple rod bearings 22500 numbers that were old stock comp bearings; they differed by the clearance available.
I do have a stash of 3 main bearings because I've bought them over the years when I have found them. As for the rod bearings, I bought from Yamato Shokai until they informed me in the mid 2000's that NDC no longer would supply the tri-metal bearing of the early Clevite, so I've just gone off old stock since. But Reinaldo and his folks will help you for gaskets and bearings for your roadster.
As for building engines, clearance I look for is 1 to 2 thou on the mains and 2 to 3 thou on the rods.
See you at the track!
