DOH! another 5th bites the dust....

Post by SLOroadster »

On my way down to the Historics, I killed another 5th gear. Traffic sped up, shifted to 5th and had nothing. This time it was on a Warner box that I thought I couldn't do it to. Time to get the first one fixed.

That blows Will! Knowing on how the 5speeds give out makes me want to think twice about a 5spd in my car.

I know the 1st one was unsplined, the 2nd probably wasn't either. I read a TSB that Nissan released which states that only the last of the '70 2 liters came with the splined 5th. Mike Young seems to think that all the warner 5spds were splined. If thats so, the double lock nuts that hold the whole nine yards together have backed off, and my tranny could explode at any minute. I do not think this is the case however as I can shift through all 5 gears just like before, and reverse (the give away, if it doesn't drop in easily the lock nuts are loose) is just like before. This transmission was also an unknown condition one that has been prone to popping out of 1st all the time. It also likes to do the 2-5 shift rather than going into 3rd. That will never do good things when you catch 5th at 5500 rpm when you are actuially looking for 3rd. Its just too big of a jump. In defence of the transmission, I do have a very healthy U20 and I do drive hard. I think a good 5spd will go a very long time if you just drive it to shows or on the occasional fun run. The 5th gear flaw was addressed by Nissan, so it is a known issue. When I get my other box rebuilt, I'll pull this one apart and see what happened.

Has anyone tried a few well placed welds on the retaining parts?
