color tune solved my problem

Post by Ted928 »

I have had problems getting the car to idle smoothly and it would often diesel when shutoff. I confirmed that ignition timing was correct at all speeds. Rebushed carb shafts with bearings helped but did not solve problems.

Since there are two carbs, you need to use the color tune tool on a front and rear cylinder. Color tune confirmed that both carbs were too rich and the rear carb could not be adjusted lean enough. Float level was OK so I checked the needle and it was set a little too deep in the slide. After adjusting the needle position, I could then adjust the carb properly by turning the adjustment nut. The car idles well and no longer diesels.

I have read some people complain that colortune instructions result in too lean of a mixture and therefore sent the tool back. They might be right since I plan on richening both carbs a quarter turn since there is a slight hesitation on light acceleration. However, at least the two carbs are now richness balanced so I can turn them both equally until I am satisfied with performance. Worth the $60 to me.

Sounds like my symptom exactly. I found the only way to see the color change from yellow to blue was in the dark. (Watch out for the fan) It's a very subtle shift in color (colour?).
Did you drop the needle down below flush, or just to flush yo the slide base?

I'm halfway there, runs great, idles crappy.

What is the "Color Tune" ??

Post by Cameron Herrmann »

This is a new one on me.. I've seen the Sync-meters with the red floats and the new version that has a "digital" metering , but haven't heard of the Color Tune ??

Is there a web site about it ??

Thanks,
Cam :?:

It is a spark plug with a clear "window" so you can see the color of the actual flame in the combustion chamber to judge mixture. If you search, it may be under Colour Tune, the English you know.

Look here, but shop around, price varies widely. I paid $40 something.
