Our Friends in the North Bay

Postby AidanDawn2000 » Tue Oct 10, 2017 12:13 am

California's wine country is currently being hit by a number of large, uncontrolled wildfires and the situation is pretty scary. We had a very smokey sunset here in Santa Cruz this evening... 170 miles away. Brian, Mike, Will, and everyone else; I am sending thoughts of low winds and good luck your way!
If it does come to it I am happy to help in any kind of evacuation...Napa Valley Roadster-ing will not be beaten!

Best wishes,

Aidan

Aidan,
The Atlas Peak fire was WAY too close for comfort. Like, until yesterday I was 99.999% sure my place was gone. I stayed as long as I could, and left when the flames were 200 yards to my east. It only would have taken a small shift of the wind to blow them right at me. I grabbed what I could throw in the back of a friends truck, and into my car and we split. The fire came from the north, and ran down Atlas peak rd. It started into William Hill winery, but then stopped and just ran down the road. It jumped Hardman Ave and continued to burn south into the Silverado Country club, it also jumped east and burned the other side of Atlas Peak Rd, but then stopped. I headed over to a friends place, but they got evacuated as well. About that time I got a call from work asking if I could head out there so there was someone who knew how to run all the pumps and who knows the property well. So, off I went. The Partrick Rd fire was insane, again blowing down the mountain from the north to my location. It stopped a few miles north of here, but it was disconcerting watching the entire hillside from valley floor to the top of the mountain on fire, and moving west, fast. Sunday/Monday turned into an insanely long day. I woke up at 7am Sunday morning, went to bed at 11:30 Monday night. Woke up yesterday to no power at work, had to get that sorted and the generators running. They ran all day. Power came back on at 7am this morning. There was no fire damage here, but the winds Sunday night made a big mess of things.

The good news is that neither the roadster nor the Alfa were down here. They are safe up in St Helena. (Safe for the time being, assuming the fires don't do anything really screwy.)

Will

Glad you and your cars are OK, Will. Very scary .
In that kind of wind I don't think they can do much. Wonder if there is some kind of flame retardent or something a homeowner could use in these emergencies. Waiting for the over matched fire Dept seems risky...

Update. The entire city of Calistoga has been evacuated. There is some risk of the fire heading for St Helena. Unfortunately, niether the roadster or the Alfa will move under their own power currently. I lent my distributor out to Simon to get his car home. the trailer that I was using burned Sunday Night. I have no way to move them if the fire comes into St Helena. The Alfa needs the whole rear end installed. its about an 8 hr job. even so, it doesn't have any driveline in it. Anyone have a distributor I could borrow just in case? I doubt I'll need to move the car, but there is a possibility that I'll have to get it out.

You can park one of your cars inside my garage if needed to. I'm 28 miles away from you. You have my cell #. Call or text me if you need any kind of help.

Will, I can help with a tow vehicle if needed, and if the roads are not closed into St Helena.

As of right now, the fires are not that close to St Helena. Calistoga, yes, but St Helena is clear. I can't get to Sacramento easily, the fire is heading toward I80 in Fairfield. Essentially I can't really leave the valley as I'm also running critical things at work as well (the place is closed, we are evacuated, but I'm 1 of 2 people on property keeping things that need daily attention going.) Should the Partrick fire make a turn, I need to be here just in case. If anyone with a truck and trailer can make it up here, it might not be a bad idea to at least relocate things for now. I think with another pair of hands I could get the back end of the Alfa back in the car with a few hours worth of work (I need to assemble the trailing arms, A-arm and put the shocks/springs on. At least then it would be a roller. ) I can leave for a few hours here and there, but I just can't be 2 hrs away should something change (doubtful, but possible). If someone has the time and the truck and trailer, give me a call. 707 312 1281. The roads are still open and traffic isn't that bad.

I'm about to go stand in line to get an escort into my place here in town. I won't have internet, but the phone will work.

Thanks,
Will

Wow, all I can say is my thoughts and prayers are with you all. Fires were terrible here in WA this year, but were mainly in the mountains and not threatening a lot of residential areas. Nothing I can do to help, but thinking of you all, as well as those struck by such challenges around our country and territories.

Relocated both the Sprint and the Roadster to American Canyon this afternoon. It was hopefully a wasted effort, but better safe than sorry. Especially when an unexpected trailer shows up looking for cars to be put on it.
