Barn find wont start
Ok I just picked up a 69 U20 barn find...... It supposedly ran when they parked it.... I hook up a battery and I get nothing, the cables are hooked to starter and ground to block. Where should I search for the problem. All fuses are good. I have a 67 but the 69 has way more relays and stuff so not sure where to look

If you have a remote starter (button type) you can bypass the key. Red on batt cable stud, black to solenoid. This will tell you if it is the starter or ign switch.

Buy Nothing, do you mean no click?
First thing to do is prime the oil system with a pressure pot through the oil gauge fitting.
After that, start with connecting the two large terminal on the starter with a old large screwdriver.
The starter should spin, but will not engage. If it pass that test, jumper a wire to the small connection to the starter. It should click and turn the engine over. If that test works, add 12V to the coil and she if she will start with starting fluid.

Re: Barn find wont start
are we sure this battery is good? listen to these people^ but I have also had great results by whacking the starter solenoid with a stick of wood
Oil a little low? Time to get a longer dipstick:)

That will usually work for a few starts. Been there, done thatAidanDawn2000 wrote:are we sure this battery is good? listen to these people^ but I have also had great results by whacking the starter solenoid with a stick of wood

Re: Barn find wont start
To turn the engine with the starter and run it by "hot-wiring" just run a small 12v wire from the battery positive to the positive on the coil. Run another small cable from the starter solenoid and touch it to the + terminal on the battery. The engine will turn over and if you have gas to the carbs it will run.

Re: Barn find wont start
Sounds like you need it cranking 1st ...not running
If it has set for years you will want to get oil pressure through out the motor before ever giving it a chance to run ,rev-ing to 3000 on a dry bearing and its toast
I had a R22 toyo lubing well up top ,fired up ran then seized on #4 rod bearing once.
pull the plugs ,check compression ,
get you a pig tail on the soleniod ,check ohms , try tapping on it , you can jump the starter mtr only

Re: Barn find wont start
The answer is it depends. If it's the OEM that is starter is a big boy. On the 67 cars you can cut out the metal triangle "splash plate" in the wheel well and get a starter out from there. On later cars and w/ the OEM starter you might have to take it out through the top the hard way.

on the late cars, the OEM starter will come out between the frame and body if you make some cold-chisel modifications to the cast iron nose.

Re: Barn find wont start
Be sure the battery is charged and connections are good. Rotate the motor by hand to see if it even turns. Be sure it's in neutral. Put a voltmeter on the battery and try to crank. If it clicks and voltage drops way down, like to 8 volts, the starter is trying to turn the motor, drawing amperage. If it just clicks and voltage drops a little, solenoid isn't engaging the starter.
Sophisticated high tech complex stuff to follow....
While trying to start it, by key or remote switch, hit the solenoid sharply with a piece of wood, or the starter from the bottom with a hammer. Jarring it can make it engage, don't be surprised if it suddenly turns the motor.

Re: Barn find wont start
I agree with redroadster. Make sure you can turn it over by hand since it's been sitting (pull the spark plugs and maybe loosen the belt). Worry about the battery/starter after you know the motor isn't locked up.
