Identifying close ratio gear boxes

We have what are at least two close ratio gear boxes and possible one medium ratio box. There is a fourth but I am pretty sure it is a regular five speed.
All four have been opened up, one has damage and one is perfectly spotless. The other two are crusty but do not appear to have any broken teeth or other damage.
How can these be positively identified? I've counted the teeth on the gears of the main clusters and can provide that information once I get home. There are some numbers stamped on the center plates but I'm told that those don't really help identify anything.
Thanks
tim
