Single-Wire Alternator - Which one to order?
For whatever reason I have never been able to get the GM 3 wire alternator to work with the stock amp gauge (1969). Blipping the throttle does nothing.
Can someone send me a link or part number for a 60amp single-wire internally regulated alternator that works?
I see this kit on Datsunparts but I already have the fusible link and $189 plus shipping seems steep.

I check the function of a alternator with a voltmeter. If the voltage raises to 13.2 volts, than its functioning properly.
The amp meter not functioning as expected. Have you made any modification to the wiring?
Its common to wire the GM alternator directly to the battery. This bypasses the amp meter.

This is good info, looks like I'm not going that route any more.
Maybe I should start from scratch with my current 3 wire and purchase this ALT-1 kit that they sell. Not sure it'll make a difference but we'll see.

Is the alternator in the stock location under the manifold or are you moving it to the right side?DatsunRoadster2000 wrote:This is good info, looks like I'm not going that route any more.

Re: Single-Wire Alternator - Which one to order?
I installed this Ultima - Alternator Part # R111621A Line: ULT Refurbished, 63Amp from O'reilly's in the stock location. Have the wire that goes to the amp meter on the positive with a 30amp in line fuse, no extra wire to the battery. Amp meter works just fine and everything can be reverted to stock. I had a bit of trouble getting the belt tight while also clearing the steering knuckle but ive driven a good 2-300 miles on it now and works like a charm not even any issues getting it to start charging.

Oh you also do need to run a jumper cable from one of the spades on the side of the alternator to the positive terminal, thats what gets it to start charging.

Re: Single-Wire Alternator - Which one to order?
Its a bit of effort, if i remember right, you need a smog bracket and a triangle thing. You have to lob the end off the smog bracket and shimmy with washers to get alignment right.

Re: Single-Wire Alternator - Which one to order?
Just replace the amp meter with a volt meter and tie the amp meter wires together.
