Electrical Probs

Post by Merlinhaggard »

I just got this car so I dont know much about it. I do restore cars so Im sure I can handle it.

I put on a new starter but couldnt get it to turn over, so I jumped from the main to the Ign post, and it turned over. That left me with the ignition. Dont know what I did but now I dont have voltage to the coil, fuses or anything else.

With my voltmeter I set the positive side to the battery and check these spots with the black lead and get -12v

If I set the black lead on my meter to the - side and check with the red lead I get nothing????

Maybe the battery to the frame or body isnt connected?

What year car? Which engine?
Big differences in the low versus high windshield fuses etc.

There is a fusible link down by the starter on the later cars.
It also has a white plastic connector that goes bad.

Theres a double plastic connector, a large (looks like) ground wire. The 2 other single wires.

Well I got it. Looking through internet images etc. Shes turning over really strong. Hit it with a couple of shots of starting fluid and got some bumps.

So now, drain the tank, fuel it up and see what happens.

I've owned at least 20 (Projects) US made cars and probably in 10 the 65-75 era and this little guy is very advanced for that time period. Pretty cool.

Every forum about anything motorized thrives on oil discussions! That said, I don't think I've ever seen one here break down into name calling, family threats etc. like most motorcycle forums. Thank goodness!

If you haven't already read it, this current discussion has some good links about oil choices. http://www.311s.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=28252

I think 10/40 is the generally accepted standard, but.......
I've been using Mobil1 synthetic 15/50, FWIW. After reading through that discussion and links I may play around with adding a high zinc assembly lube to something a little thinner at cold temps.

Thank you guys!!

There are some great wiring diagrams in the wiki.
Depending on the year, I think the wires relate to the backup light.
There is a harness which runs under the car to the switch on the transmition.

I think it plugs into the wires you show.

Starter harness connected to dash harness and two wires (red/black) for back up light switch on transmission. Starter harness looks damaged.
66 stroker, almost done.
