Re: Four speed transmission replace adventure
Well I'm sticking with my carter E pump for now anyway (how many demerits Ted?)
Well yesterday I decided to run through the gears with my transmission all buttoned up. And well, I'm so glad I did as this little test pointed to trouble.
The very short version is the car was in reverse gear when I made my little square box for the striker. doh
This caused all kinds on unexpected issues which another member very kindly helped me work it out.
Now the little square box looks like this and all the gears can be obtained. Before the reverse gear was at the end of the green arrow.
Whew, I'd be hotter then hell now if I put the transmission back in and it would not shift properly.
In reverse as an island with no striker in sight ... fixed now though. Having a transmission which shifts is a good idea

Re: Four speed transmission replace adventure
Since the striker is out, I'm thinking of adding an additional pin inside the one it has.keith0alan wrote:If you want to be anal and possible save some problems later you can replace the roll pin holding the striker to the shaft. There are high strength ones that are two wraps rather than one or you can install the regular pin and a second tiny one inside. If this pin sheers all shifting will stop. Really inexpensive to fix, less than a buck for the part, but a real pain to do.
The hole is such that a 5/64 inch bit slides easy, but a 3/32 will not enter.
Thinking I can use a 3/32 pin inside the current one for added strength. I'm nervous of taking out the existing pin and then trying to find the right replacement size.
Thoughts?

Good plan. A second smaller pin inside does the trick.

Re: Four speed transmission replace adventure
Well with the engine out and the wheels off I decided to do some easy stuff. I replaced my OEM clutch cable with a stainless version and I bled the brakes.
Yesterday I bought some highway tires after getting my wheels turned down. Tomorrow... (it's a perpetual day) soon after carpets installed the transmission and engine can go in. Waiting because it's easier to install heater and valves without engine in place.

Besides 110 is not perfect roadster weather. The garage could use an AC though

Re: Four speed transmission replace adventure
Well I got two coats of POR-15 rust preventative on the floor.
Next step will be sound deadening material the carpet and finally the engine and transmission installed.
Here is after and before. POR-15 has a strong odor.
Tunnel was free of rust so it was not painted.
Wonder if the silver color means my car was originally silver?
Oh well ...

And so the transmission is together and the flywheel is on, waiting on advice on lock-tight to torque the flywheel.
Here is the flywheel on the crank ...
9 grams were removed from the flywheel and 9 grams from the pp. So much for pp neutrality.

Re: Four speed transmission replace adventure
So today I put 11 miles on tranny and no more obnoxious noise when accelerating and no grinding in any gears in either direction. No leaking from the tach drive either.
Was a humongous amount of work with tranny, clutch flywheel, clutch hose, carpet, POR-15, sound deadner, gauges, radio, relocation of seats and a wideband install.
Of course still not done. Oh and changed tire size too.

Re: Four speed transmission replace adventure
I put a jack under the front frame right in front of the engine and lift it up about 4 inches. My hoist will then slide under the lower control arms (the wheels are not in the way of my hoist).

Re: Four speed transmission replace adventure
Well thanks, now that I've replaced everything (cooling wise: fan, water pump, thermostats cap and tower top, alternator) except radiator it's still hitting 215 degrees uphill. Thinking my radiator may be at fault, tubes (some) were repaired many moons back from the metal fan exploding into it. May try an aluminum radiator

Re: Four speed transmission replace adventure
Have yours recored. Had mine done, they couldn't make it a 4 tube so I had them do it with bigger tubes. I also haven't run the engine yet.
We'll see,

Re: Four speed transmission replace adventure
What I thought was a leaking rear main seal was not. It was my tach cable. I thought I'd corrected the leak about a year or two ago. Turns out not, this time I did it correctly by removing the two old seals still inside. Then added just one new tach drive seal. Now the tach cable is bone dry as is the rest of the engine and transmission after 100 miles.
Happy days for me!
