Four speed transmission replace adventure

Post by msampsel »

Took off the front cover and shot some photos of inerds
Today. Does the yellow paint on the shifter links and other shard etc indicate a rebuild?

Looks like I have the warner countershaft in this one.
I can't find any brass though near the gears. Trying to determine if Swepco 201 is safe.

Found some grit on the counter shaft.
Will be doing at least a serious cleaning (sloshing about mineral spirits suggested).

Anyone see anything to be concerned with?

Yellow paint is often salvage parts, I have found.

certainly is a warner. Don't know the significance, but often seen the yellow paint inside OE boxes too. (Linda is correct though salvage companies often put yellow markings on the outside)

Yes, you and Michael Young agree, the yellow is factory.
Guess it has not been rebuilt.

Most likely factory paint indicating some QC check was done.

Well I took off the tail section which likely created unneeded work. Since the idler shaft was solid I should have just replaced the seals and the lower gasket oh well.

Scott's Sheelers manuals do have some clutch info. It is in the transmission assembly section.

Wonder if the pressure plate bolt torque values are the same for an aluminum flywheel (e.g. 35 ft/lbs)?

A little extra cleaning and gasket replacement never hurts. I would think the flywheel pressure plate bolt torque would be the same. Not 100% sure but can't think of any reason for it to be different.

Counter shaft and needle bearings OK?
Good time to check, often those are replaced.

No motion other than back and forth. They are good to go

Clutch to flywheel torque in tech wiki is wrong?

If I go to Gordon's garage it lists these bolts as M8
Looking at max torque for grade 8, M8 size I find 18 ft/Lbs.
I'm going to assume 15 ft/lbs and not 35 is a better number.

Seems some unsuspecting shade tree dude might snap them bolts with 35 ft/lbs.

Well I wanted to swap my 67 finned aluminum cover for the steel one on the newer transmission.
Alas, the threads changed and the newer bolts are too short for the thicker aluminum plate.
So, the cost of (and the hunt) for new longer bolts to accept the pretty aluminum cover are just not worth it.

Darn ...

ACE Hardware has gracious plenty bolts. Not much of a hunt. I can't comment on the budget.

Yes, I might save this for a future swap project. I already bolted my plate to the tranny.
Wonder if the red tacky gasket sealer I used will allow me to remove my plate?

And does anyone look at the underside besides me? :D

So I got the front seal installed today, it went in a lot easier than the rear seal. Pushed in by hand.

It's time to bolt on the tail section.

Per Scott's book there should be a box for the striker to enter.
I have a picture of the box and the striker and my estimate of how they meet/attach.

It seems pretty straight forward, thought I'd share and ask.
