Is the throwout bearing lever the same for the 4-speed box as the 5-speed box??

Might be able to "fix" the notch by using a washer on the back side.

Not quite that simple John, but if I drill out a washer to accommodate the spring in some fashion, might delay the inevitable.

I thought a stainless pin of the right size and
Some JB weld to keep it there might delay it too.
Just an ameteur here though no real experience with

Try removing the slave cylinder and leave the hose connected. Then slip off the rubber boot and inspect whether the throwout lever has come off the ball behind it or if the retention spring is broken (unlikely). For the notch , you could get someone to weld it with a MIG welder.

All SEEMINGLY working.
Took everything off, disassembled, reassembled, installed, seems to work - FOR NOW - bought spare set just in case.
Phone "extra hand" - brilliant idea.

Wow, bummer Peter.
No need to tear down for the notch. Might tke a longer spring (as I remember this being quite a tough stretch to make), but all the spring has to do is go thru that hole and not go back thru, so put the tip of the spring thru the hole, then put a washer on it, then put a wire nut (electrical termination device) or some sort of crimping unit on it. (the soft lead squeezers they put in picture hanging kits may be enough, if not they have better ones at West Marine for boat rigging)

Found something in messing around with clutch which would undeniably, eventually fail at worst possible moment.
Note the NOTCH carved into the bottom of the throwout bearing lever.
Don't know how much longer it would take for the spring to completely wear through, but certainly worth checking on your car …
Not to resurrect an old thread … Well, ok, it is, but randomly perusing them can provide some great insight.
Checked my throw out bearing lever and sure enough, a similar notch was carved out by the spring. Not nearly as pronounced as this one, but definitely an issue. A small steel washer and a bit of JB Weld worked great. I can now add this to the list of things I don’t have to worry about … for now.
Who knows, it might help someone else out.
