Latest Forum Update

Post by S Allen »

So, if you have no interest in what makes the forum work do not bother reading. The latest update to the forum software is a major change and is not as straight forward as it was in the past. I have tried several times but have been unsuccessful in both attempts. So, I need to attack it from a different angle. I will be working on it this weekend. So, if things go wonky that is why. I need to undo many of the mods we have-go to one style which is prosilver- remove language packs I have installed. I will then take the board offline so I can do a full backup of the database. I will then bring the board back online and re-enable most of the mods and styles. That way I can take this upgrade off of the production forum and muck around with it offline to see if I can get it to work without breaking a bunch of things. If I can get everything to work offline the way it should. I will then plan on disabling the production board once again-do another full backup of the database. Restore that to the offline, run an upgrade on the database and then copy everything back up the the web hosting service. The only style we will have available on the new board will be pro silver and I know some of the folks whom have been around for a long time prefer subsilver. Hopefully, the style author will create a subsilver style compatible with the new version of phpBB. So, hope everyone understands. Thanks.

Well that just sounds simple as pie!
Good luck, I appreciate all the work you do to keep us relevant in our own little digital universe.
Perhaps now is a good time to make that donation.....

Steve,
If you go to the User Control Panel it gives an option for the logged in user to designate their preferred style . I have subsilver I think it is, not the Prosilver you mentioned we were stuck with.
So try the User Control Panel and set things up to see if it works.

Steve, while the management of the forum is beyond my understanding, I do know that without you efforts it would not be available for me to visit (sometimes, several times a day) so, thank you for all your effort.

Linda,

I am not going to guarantee that subsilver style will work or behave as it should. Do that at your own risk.

Nothing major has changed just yet. I spent the last day getting a good backup of the forum. We have a large amount of attachments(pictures) that are currently still backing up. At least now I can try the upgrade off of the active forum to make sure it works before I proceed with doing the live forum. So with that-there will be another disruption coming sometime in the future. Stay tuned or not. Thanks.

Steve,
I don't envy you. I completely understand the process, the risk and the time it takes to backup and restore. What a pain. We all appreciate it. We did miss it yesterday as throughout the day I tried to look something up and forgot it was "under construction".
If I lived nearby I'd come by to help. I can't image a day where 311s.org would be gone and I'd have to fall back on the awful factory manual. LOL with those washed out pictures and horrible at times translation.
I would even more the tips and help and comradery that I received here.

Alvin,

That should not have changed but obviously it did. I will look into it.

Sid,

You mean the up arrow on the lower right hand of the screen? I just re-enabled that. Hope that is what you were talking about.

I think it has something to do with BB code/flash being "off"? Thanks for checking!
