Q from 240z guy: Oil Pressure Sender Range
Hi All,
I do not have a Datsun roadster (yet) but I have some early Z's.
It is my understanding that Nissan designers used parts from other products when producing the Z thus my query here:
My early 240's have oil pressure gauges that go to 140psi however there was a factory TSB to replace then with 90psi units. Since I wish to keep the original gauges, I need corresponding oil pressure senders that go to 140psi (rather than the commonly available 90psi units).
Do any roadsters have the 140psi senders and is there a part number and supplier for them?
Many thanks!

Amazingly enough.... Same sender http://www.carpartsmanual.com/datsun/Z- ... /240z-260z
Look at line 34
It is my understanding that with the 140 gauge there was a lot of fear about the pressure being too low. With the 140 my 1970 runs at about 1/4 gauge on the freeway and my '72 runs at 1/2 with the 90 gauge. Same pressure but the gauge reading makes you worry.

Did the later roadsters have senders? Mine is a pressure line all the way to the gauge.

No, the senders were only used on the low windshield cars - high windshield cars have a manual gauge with a pressure line.

Thanks all! Is there a source and part number for the low windshield senders?
bkippen, the strange thing is that the part number remained the same but the sender was different in very early cars (mine are HLS30-00147 and HLS30-00249). I think the part number covers all units after the change so those of us with early production models are caught out.
FYI my Z's are so early they have some plastic parts that are normally metal but the parts were not ready in time so pre-production plastic samples were used. The pre-production samples were almost the same as prototypes. Here is an example of the fuel door knob and latch.

Plastic Detail (Yes they are mostly all chipped and cracked sadly)
Thanks all!

Re: Q from 240z guy: Oil Pressure Sender Range
A superseeded part number
Doubtful the sender was made by datsun ,more likely by a vender
Tokico, nabco, hitachi, 2or 3 others
Our instructor in the 70s told that at the end of a day at the factory, workers were to take a 5 gal bucket back to the company supplied apartment and assemble, small relays ,swt. Plastic parts etc . If a worker got fired the family was removed from there home too of course .

I would also assume you have the plastic clips for the inspection covers then.

Re: Q from 240z guy: Oil Pressure Sender Range
I wonder if there are any differences in the senders anyway. Did the oil pumps change? I doubt the actual oil pressure changed. Highly doubt they would have used higher oil pressure in the early engines....trying to rationalize why the sender would change, as well as the gauge. Doesn't make sense to me that they would change both??
I take it your sending unit is not working? Rebuilt gauge?
Have you tried a new unit?
Can a gauge company, such as classic instruments, rebuild your early sensor so you can retain the stock look?

Re: Q from 240z guy: Oil Pressure Sender Range
I understand that the mussle car , pushrod days V8's ,the cam bearings would spin and you would get a spike in oil pressure , so they wanted these high pressure guages to show the problem and hopefully save desruction of the block ,was the reason for that type of guage
