broken shifter, oh my!

Hello all,
Brian and I went to Buttonwillow for his VARA driving school with the new 13 car. At the very end of the second day the shifter broke off. Looking at the break it was obvious that it had been cracked for a very long time. In order to replace the broken part the pin where it broke needs to come out. It is the pin that it pivots on rather than the pin that attaches to the shift rod. Does anyone know how this pin comes out? It has a slot on one end. The last time I tried to remove one I had no success at all. The other option is to replace the shift assembly. That involves removing the trans and tearing into it. We would rather no go there.
