broken shifter, oh my!

Post by keith0alan »

Hello all,

Brian and I went to Buttonwillow for his VARA driving school with the new 13 car. At the very end of the second day the shifter broke off. Looking at the break it was obvious that it had been cracked for a very long time. In order to replace the broken part the pin where it broke needs to come out. It is the pin that it pivots on rather than the pin that attaches to the shift rod. Does anyone know how this pin comes out? It has a slot on one end. The last time I tried to remove one I had no success at all. The other option is to replace the shift assembly. That involves removing the trans and tearing into it. We would rather no go there.

As soon as I saw the little hole it became obvious and easy. Thank you very much.

Keith:
I have seen this happen before but only with the aluminum bushings. Never seen it happen with rubber bushings.

We are using the aluminum bushings. Interesting that about 80% of the crack surface was very old. Rubber bushings may have delayed the break but I have no doubt that it was going to break at some time. I may fabricate a replacement out of steel with a bit more material in that area. A replacement was pulled from another transmission and bead blasted. I did not see any sign of cracks.
