Late 68-70 tall windshield wing vent windows.

After selling my spl wing vent windows, I started wondering if anyone has ever fabricated a set to fit later SRL tall windshield cars?

The glass was flat with one ground cut hole. The frame could be stainless steel to avoid chroming. The spring can be sourced easily enough and the rubber seal can be molded from eurothane or silicone...which would be one of the more involved steps since that will be a left/right part.

Cheers, Vinny

I like the look of no vent window....... discuss that option.

I don't know if anyone has ever thought of it, but I think I wold like the look. Don't think it is quite as simple as yo u indicate - also left/right latches and pins to rotate on.

....as in a solid glass without any triangle glass? I'd bet it could be engineered albeit MUCH too modern looking for my taste.

Simple? No.....I hope I didn't come across like I though it simple to do. Fabbing fully from stainless makes skipping chroming and metal molding. Lots of grinding and forming of the bits.

I'll need to source some cheap stockers for profile/spec checking and sacrificial study to try it.

I don't have vent windows on my 69.....I don't have side widows at all for that matter.....
without removing my vent windows, it looks like you could modify the early vent window frames to fit.
That's where I would start! If you duplicated vent frames in stainless, I am sure there's a market.

I'd prefer to re-use the 68-70 stock glass with some proper grinding and careful drilling. It may end up possible to even re-use the frames and attaching the low production stainless bits to make them all work. I'd imagine utilizing the earlier car wing window reproduction rubbers with some surgery and urethane would yield a great finished look.

even if you use the early frame, I agree it would be best to start with modified late glass.

Yep,agree for sure! I was studying a set of early and late side by side yesterday and believe that the way to go with the latches/pivots is to CNC stainless bits that can be polished to appear as chrome. The original versions already have a stainless cradle holding the bottom of the glass.

now are you speaking of making the triangle glass be able to open or be a a single window ,one big piece of glass no triangle ? I had a VW bug with no triangle ,California style I think they called it . although I like the function of opening triangles . this is a newer post yes ? anyway I love new ideas .

Operational just like the early short windshield cars , just with our taller version. To open and close.

If the glass is tempered you won't be able to put a hole in it. Has to be there before you temper it.

Hmmm, interesting. I've not worked much with glass. One of the few things I've not spent any time with in fabrication. Is it not possible to use a diamond bit to slowly grind a pilot hole ? Or is it once it is relieved of pressure in one spot it cracks no matter?

Tempered glass will explode into little cubes if stressed or shocked. Biggest thing you need to develop after the glass would be the weatherstrip, very complex piece. If you get that far, Dean may be of help, he has experience making and getting rubber parts made.
