Steering box lubricant and leaks

Anybody know what kind of lubricant goes in the steering box? I have a 68 2000 with a leaky box, has been that way for some time. My manuals show capacity, but not type of lubricant. Any words of advice about how to pinpoint a leak, rebuild options, etc., appreciated. Thanks, Dewey

Gear oil - the same stuff that goes in the transmission and differential. As for finding the leak, put some in, get the front end up off the ground and turn the wheel left and right - it will become evident. You may be OK just replacing the offending seal. Rebuilding the box is rather expensive.

Mike Young suggested putting heavier lube in. If the viscosity is high enough, and your leak is small enough, it should sto leaking. I plan on doing this trick myself, but my box leaks so little and there are always other things to get to first.
