Moving the stock alternator to the right side on a U20

Post by hport »

Anyone interested in text and photos on using the stock alternator on the right side of the U20 ? If so let me know how to get it posted.

I keeping track of the changes I'm doing on a 68 SLR, and the latest was a clutch swap / flywheel weight reduction, remount alternator to right side and 4 blade fan install. All worked as expected.

Send them to me either at 67 datroad@311s.org of 67datroad@comcast.net--either address will work. Thanks.

Hey am very interested in this process and was wondering if anyone has had a chance to post the information on the site. I looked over the main page and didn't see any direct obvious links.

Um, I don't mean to throw the wet towel on things, but this was documented on Brian Holldands site. Here is the link:

Steve,

I can understand that. One thing that I have heard is that folks use the alternator bracket from a low windshield 1600 and don't have the mounting hardware failures that some of the folks that use the smog pump brackets experience.

Sid,

Yes, I have heard the same thing. The alignment of the water pump pulley and crank pulley on the later cars makes it a bit more challenging than the early cars. All of those washers for spacers work but I have heard of people snapping the bolts clean off with that setup. Come on hport let us all see what you did??

I forgot until I was searching the main site. Eric Smeby shared his install using the smog bracketery and a single wire GM alt. Here it is:
