Misleading rebuild information in Chiltons

Post by Datrock »

Last week while checking out an R16 a friend had on a stand, I notice the oil slinger was behind the crank sprocket. This make 2 out of the last 5 or 6 engines I have seen opened up having it installed that way. I remembered that years ago I once read to install it that way and actually found the misleading information in the Datsun Chilton Manual that covers 1961-72, it may have a yellow 1200 image on the cover. In the rebuild section, pages 59 and 60, it refers to the oil slinger being removed and replaced behind the crank sprocket which is wrong, it goes in front of it. If installed behind the sprocket your timing components will be short lived.
So if you have this mentioned book I would amend the two paragraphs as to where it refers to placing the oil slinger in front of sprocket..

The same on many a Datsun service manual back in the 70s ,even Nissan manuals but they sent a new page that glued to the old inaccurate one

it looks like the online carpartsmanual has it correct:

http://www.carpartsmanual.com/datsun/sp ... crankshaft

see part #72. (in front of the sprocket)

72 OIL THROWER-CRANKSHAFT (SLINGER)

on the U20 it also goes in front with the depression facing the sprocket.

I just ran into this issue today and it threw me until I looked at the online parts manual, just like what's shown in the last post. The slinger sits in front of the crank sprocket, not behind (bad on Chilton's !) it's the last thing to go on the crank snout before installing the cover---my Chiltons book is so beat up and has all kinds of scrawled notes from some distant prior Datsun owner-dude, but it still has good old car info. L series engines are set up the same way; the slinger keeps oil from splashing directly against the backside of the front seal to prevent leaks past the seal lip. I believe that it snugs up pretty close when everything is in correct placement, so don't set the seal too far back in the cover. Tap it in, but leave like 1/32" so it's not perfectly flush with the timing cover.

The seals were installed flush iirc. That being said, a lot of pulleys have grooves, so altering the depth is not a bad thing
