pep boys has a speaker box with 2 -6 1/2 '' speakers and tweeters. cost is 15.00 . it will fit behind the seat on the shelf of a roadster. change the speakers and it sounds really good, even at freeway speeds. with the top down you can't even see it but you can hear it.

Sounds good (pun intended ), but a few questions:

1. What speakers were in it?
2. What did you replace them with?
3. What do you have powering the speakers?
4. And was that with the top up or down?

I saw that too, I think it has really crappy 6 1/2" rounds, but the shape is good. Could hide a small amp inside it. Down to 9.99 after the rebate, if you remember to mail it!

Powering with 200 watt alpine,speakers are crap so replaced with klipsch. and thats with the top down.

The pep boys $10.00 speakers must be crap. I just bought 2 pair of 4" speakers for my stereo install that cost $48.00 per pair. They're small, but sound great. When I put the equalizer on super bass, they sound like 6 inchers.

I just installed a pair of surface mount speakers on the package shelf of my roadster. I wired them using snap connectors and "attached" them using the hook side of some stick-on Velcro. That way if I need more space or want to autocross I can pop them out in seconds. Not elegant but it sure was easy and now I have tunes in my ride.

I also considered putting some speakers up in the foot wells, but given the amount of engine noise I don't think they would be very effective.

1970 2000 Roadster

I have two holes hacked in the rear bulkhead for 6x9 speakers, but I think I'll put two 6 1/2 " in the side panels behind the seat just below thw top bracket. There is a large round hole in the sheetmetal already, looks factory.

Tom, If you did install a new stereo, Im curious, where did you hook up the hot wire? I just did an install and used the horn wire in the fuse box for power. Also, I did pretty much the same thing for the rear speakers. I have small enclosures behind my seats with velcro. Regarding your comments about front speakers. I put a new speaker in the right footwell stock speaker box and smaller box(4"speaker) in the driver's footwell, above the foot rest. When I adjust for fade and balance, the front speakers make a BIG difference. I have a 180 watt stereo and with the 4 speakers, I can hear the music with the top down at 70 mph.

I thought the engine and wind noise WAS the music.

It is when you're driving canyons, hillsides and twisties, but after an hour of continuous freeway driving, the "noise" can get irritating! Crank up Led Zep!!

The way I look at it, you are buying a speaker box. It happens to have some noise makers in it. For $15 (or $10 after the rebate) do you really expect music hall sound??

I have to agree with Pete. The engine IS the music! I got one of those boxes to listen to talk radio on the stock AM radio.

Maybe you get better reception out there (hilly where I live) or have a more sensitive tuner, but at speed with the stock AM radio, I can't hear talk radio or music.

Okay, Howard, I'll concede that a radio/tape/CD/MP3/whatever player is nice for rushhour and endless freeway driving, but I'll worry about music -AFTER- the car is running again.

In the meantime....vroooooooom! vroooooooooom!

Power:
My Cd player was already installed by the previous owner, actually 2 owners ago. He sold it before he installed speakers. Anyway, the power has 2 wires, the yellow is always hot and is connected to the clock, the red is connected to the accessory terminal in the fuse box. The yellow keeps the memory, the red runs the radio when the key is turned. Obviously the ground is also just connected to the firewall up under the footwell. The unit is installed in the glovebox.

Speakers:
I guess I will take a crack at putting some speakers up under the footwells. I was trying to avoid and major surgery on the sheet metal, and I have seen some surface mount 4" 2-ways on the web. Maybe Crutchfield. The beauty of the speakers that I put in the back shelf is that they were FREE from a friend who didn't want them. They are nothing special, Pioneer 6" with a 3" tweeter, but they do the job. I removed the old stock speakerbox.

Music
Yes I agree that the engine is the music but I do like a little accompaniment from the Led Zep, Sheryl Crow, Green Day..... plus if the music is loud enough I don't here as many rattles and squeaks..
