I have a original steel flywheel that is straight and I also have a stepped aluminum flywheel, this one also doesn't have dowel pins drilled yet as well. I would like to use the Al. but if stock is straight cut, I would assume I need a custom cut disc and plate to match it. This is a single disc stepped flywheel with ~ a .125" step. Not sure of the manufacture as it is not marked.

Anyone come across this?

I have the NISMO alloy flywheel, it has a steel friction surface, it sounds like yours might be missing it. I love my light flywheel, it takes a little time to get used to it, but once you get over the innital cange its fun stuff, gets better gas milage as well

This alloy flywheel has a steel contact surface, but it is raised about .125" off the surrounding surface. It weighs just under 6 pounds with the ring gear installed.

I just finished machining a stock 20 pound steel flywheel to 13.5 pounds. I followed much of Sharp's suggestions to lighten, but took another .100" off the outter edge . After everything was bolted up, it required shimming the throw out pivot to get the correct slave cylinder stroke. The Flywheel looks very good and hope to have it installed in a week or so. The alloy is half again the weight, so it will wait until I can get a custom disc and plate made for the step in the flywheel. This is something for the track car anyway, but I'm real interested in seeing the difference between the weights.
